Deworming Children

As parents, we all want our children to grow strong, healthy and full of energy. But sometimes, tiny uninvited guests in form of worms can quietly affect our children’s health without us noticing at first. That’s why deworming is so important, especially for growing children.

In this post, we’ll talk about what deworming means, when to start, how often to do it and the signs to watch out for.

What Is Deworming; Deworming simply means giving your child medicine to remove worms or intestinal parasites that may be living in their stomach or intestines.

There are different types of these worms and the common ones that affect children include:

•Roundworms

•Hookworms

•Whipworms

•Tapeworms

These worms can enter the body through contaminated food, unclean hands, soil, or even water especially in places where children play barefoot or don’t always wash their hands before eating.

Why Deworming Matters

Worms feed on the nutrients your child needs to grow. Over time, they can cause:

•Poor appetite or picky eating

•Weight loss or poor growth

•Tiredness or weakness from low blood level (anemia)

•Stomach pain or swelling

•Itchy bottom especially at night

•Frequent diarrhea

Even if your child looks fine, worms can still be present that’s why doctors recommend routine deworming and  not just when you see symptoms.

When Should You Deworm Your Child?

Here’s a general guide (but always follow your doctor’s advice):

•Babies (under 1 year): Deworming is not usually recommended before 12 months unless advised by a doctor.

•From 1 year and above: Most health experts recommend every 6 months (twice a year).

•In high-risk areas (like many parts of Nigeria): Some doctors may advise deworming every 3–4 months.

Deworming medicines are available over the counter and are often given free during health campaigns or school programs.

Tip: Always check the correct dose for your child’s age and follow your healthcare provider’s advice.

Simple Tips to Prevent Worms

Deworming works best when combined with good hygiene and here’s how to protect your family:

•Wash hands before eating and after using the toilet.

•Trim your child’s fingernails regularly.

•Make sure they wear slippers or shoes outside.

•Wash fruits and vegetables properly before eating.

•Drink clean water.

•Keep the toilet and play area clean.

Deworming may seem like a small thing, but it plays a big role in keeping your child healthy, active and full of life. It helps them get the best out of the food they eat and supports their growth and learning.
