HOW MUCH WATER SHOULD BABIES BELOW 6MONTHS HAVE?

The issue is we see babies as little adults so we expect they’d be thirsty especially after every meal just like adults. In babies, virtually every organ is maturing but this isn’t the case for adults that’s why we can eat or drink however we choose to as adults but babies on the other hand require as much nutrient as they can possibly get for all the ongoing developmental processes at this stage.

It’s very important we focus on these nutrients and remember that their stomach space is little. So, we’re talking about maximising the little stomach space at this critical stage of development.

Oftentimes, you’d be told breastmilk contains almost 90% of water but the water contained in formula after preparation isn’t often talked about, this is why when you’re told not to give water to babies who are below six months of age we only think about exclusively breastfed babies which is wrong as both breastmilk and infant formula contain virtually the same amount of water but the problem is many moms don’t follow the instructions as spelt out on the labels of these formula especially in our environment.

Mixing your baby’s formula as instructed on the formula labels will also make that formula contain almost 90% of water just like breastmilk so babies below six months do not need extra water

Many do believe that when babies aren’t given water they’d end up becoming constipated and this is a common cause of confusion and worry amongst many moms so it’s important we know that most feeds we give at this stage of life are usually used up by the body that little or nothing is left to be passed out as waste products in stool. Generally, babies staying up to 3-7days without stooling is often normal and shouldn’t be a cause for worry

It’s recommended that babies between 0-6months of age be given only breastmilk or formula to meet their nutritional demands and keep them hydrated. The number of diapers and colour of urine will generally give an idea of your baby’s hydration level. Having 4-5 diaper change and clear urine is often a sign your baby is well hydrated

In conclusion, moms are encouraged to maximise the little stomach of their little humans so they can always get as much nutrients as possible needed for the various ongoing developmental processes. Breastmilk\formula contains adequate amount of water required at this age of 0-6months
