It’s important babies have their mouth cleaned right from the newborn stage. You don’t have to wait until their teeth start coming in. As soon as you get home after delivery you can start cleaning your baby’s mouth. The mouth of babies need to be germs-free and areas to focus on include the gum, tongue and the inner cheeks
Cleaning the mouth helps them get familiar with their mouth being cleaned right from an early age so it doesn’t come to them as a shock when they become older. It is also helpful in preventing germs from thriving and this will prevent cavity formation and other common infections
How to clean baby’s mouth;
For babies with no teeth, a soft napkin or gauze and warm water are basically all you need
Dip the napkin or gauze in the warm water, wrap it around your index finger, open your baby’s mouth and gently wipe the gum and the tongue in a circular motion, also wipe the the inner cheeks
For babies with teeth, as soon as the first tooth appears you can start using a soft toothbrush or finger brush with an age appropriate toothpaste. You only need a very little amount of toothpaste about the size of a grain of rice.
From about 3 years of age, you can increase the amount of toothpaste to pea-size. The essence of using little amount of toothpaste is because babies can’t spit out like adults and older kids do and by swallowing too much toothpaste, it can lead to accumulation of excess fluoride in the body
In cleaning your baby’s mouth, you don’t have to use glycerin, salt, tomatoes or anything of such. For little babies with no teeth yet, cleaning with a clean damp cloth or gauze is just fine
You can clean baby’s mouth as often as twice everyday
