Baby taking vaccine shots can take a toll on you and your baby right from the process of vaccination to few hours and sometimes a few days after the shot.
Here are some important things to bear in mind before and after an immunization shot
On the day of the shot:
- Dress your baby in clothes that are easy to remove; kids below one year will usually have their shots in the thigh while toddlers and older kids will usually receive their shot in the arm
- Remember to take baby’s immunization card along with you
- Seeing your baby receive their shot may make you worry or feel sad for your baby but it’s important you stay as calm as possible so you don’t make your baby anxious and if you can’t stand the site of injections, you can get a family member to assist you or ask your caregiver to provide one for you
After the shot:
- It’s okay for baby to cry while receiving the shot but they will usually stop crying after a cuddle
- The vaccine site may become hard or sore but this will usually resolve on its own
- Don’t rub anything on the vaccine site; rubbing, massaging or applying things like shea butter, mentholatum can put the site at risk of infections
- Don’t also press with hot water
- Avoid unprescribed medications
High body temperature after a vaccine and how to treat it:
- Avoid too many layers of clothes
- Feed baby on demand
- Give paracetamol
