Poor sleep is a common challenge among new moms. Since baby won’t sleep for long, good sleep is is often far from many new moms and it’s even worse when you have no one assisting you.
There are a couple of reasons baby may not sleep for long and some of these factors include:
- They are unable to differentiate between night and day yet just as it was while they were in the womb
- Babies tend to become hungry within a short period of time due to their small tummy size
- Overfeeding baby can make them uncomfortable
- Hot weather condition and over wrapping baby when the weather is hot
- Soiled diaper
- Baby might be ill
Ways you can improve your baby’s sleep:
- Create a routine for baby as early as possible and stick to the routine; choose a particular time of the day when you will be putting baby to sleep and ensure to stick to that time of the day as much as you can because little children thrive on routine.
- Take note of any position that helps your baby sleep faster and put baby in that position. For instance, some babies sleep off easily while breastfeeding while some babies may sleep off the moment you place them on your back. Identify what works for your baby and assume that position during your routine.
- Ensure baby is comfortable, well fed and not overfed, ensure the diaper isn’t soiled
- Burp baby after feeding to expel excess gas
- Dress baby according to the weather condition; when it’s a hot weather, baby should be properly dressed but when the weather is hot, clothings should be light
- Minimize noise and dim or turn off the light
It may take a couple of days or weeks for baby to get used to routine but it’s important you’re consistent to achieving the result. Get help as much as you can to ease the stress of poor sleep
