CLEANING BABY’S MOUTH

 

It’s important babies have their mouth cleaned right from the newborn stage. You don’t have to wait until their teeth start coming in. As soon as you get home after delivery you can start cleaning your baby’s mouth. The mouth of babies need to be germs-free and areas to focus on include the gum, tongue and the inner cheeks

Cleaning the mouth helps them get familiar with their mouth being cleaned  right from an early age so it doesn’t come to them as a shock when they become older.  It is also helpful in preventing germs from thriving and this will prevent cavity formation and other common infections

How to clean baby’s mouth;

For babies with no teeth, a soft napkin or gauze and warm water are basically all you need

Dip the napkin or gauze in the warm water, wrap it around your index finger, open your baby’s mouth and gently wipe the gum and the tongue in a circular motion, also wipe the the inner cheeks

For babies with teeth, as soon as the first tooth appears you can start using a soft toothbrush or finger brush with an age appropriate toothpaste. You only need a very little amount of toothpaste about the size of a grain of rice. 

From about 3 years of age, you can increase the amount of toothpaste to pea-size. The essence of using little amount of toothpaste is because babies can’t spit out like adults and older kids do and by swallowing too much toothpaste, it can lead to  accumulation of excess fluoride in the body

In cleaning your baby’s mouth, you don’t have to use glycerin, salt, tomatoes or anything of such. For little babies with no teeth yet, cleaning with a clean damp cloth or gauze is just fine

You can clean baby’s mouth as often as twice everyday

As a new mom you can start cleaning your baby’s mouth right from the newborn stage, you don’t have to wait until the teeth start coming in. Aside the fact that this introduces them to good oral hygiene practices early, it prevents dental cavities and other common dental problems in children
